A rug is the most-walked-on textile in the house. Grit works down to the base of the pile and grinds the fibres, oils from feet and paws bind the dirt in, and vacuuming only reaches the top third. Steam cleaning — properly, hot water extraction — rinses all of that out and pulls it back into our machine, not further into the backing.
Grit, stains and pet smells — lifted out of the rug, not covered up.
Adelaide service
Nobody should be blasting raw steam at a rug: it can shrink cotton, set protein stains and leave the backing soaked. Professional steam cleaning is hot water extraction. A heated cleaning solution is sprayed into the pile and, in the same pass, a strong vacuum pulls it back out along with the loosened dirt. The extraction half is what matters. A machine that puts water in without getting it back out leaves a damp rug, a tide-mark and, a week later, a musty smell.
We keep the moisture low and the extraction strong. That is the difference between a rug you can walk on by dinner and one still damp under the couch two days later.
We also clean the back if it is a flatweave or a rubber-backed mat that has had something soak through. Fringes get a detail clean for +$20 because they are cotton, tangle easily and take extra care.
Polypropylene, polyester, nylon and acrylic rugs are made for this: the fibres do not absorb water, dyes are stable, and they dry fast. Cotton flatweaves and dhurries clean well with lower moisture. Shag and high-pile synthetics come up beautifully but take longer to dry. Machine-made rugs sold as “wool-look” are almost always polypropylene and are fine.
Wool, hand-knotted Persian and Oriental, silk, viscose, jute, sisal, sheepskin and cowhide are a different story: they can shrink, bleed dye, brown or felt under hot water extraction. We do not clean them, and we will tell you if that is what you have rather than take the risk with your rug. Our guide on telling what a rug is made of explains how to check.

Common questions
Usually 2–4 hours for a synthetic rug, 4–6 for thick shag or cotton. A fan, an open window or lifting one edge onto a chair all speed it up. Keep furniture off it until it is dry to the touch, and book a morning slot if you want the room back that night.
Yes. We use low moisture and strong extraction so the carpet underneath stays dry, and we lift the rug to check before we leave. If the rug has a rubber backing we may move it onto a hard floor so air can get underneath while it dries.
Not a synthetic or cotton rug cleaned with controlled moisture and pH-neutral solution — that is what we use. Shrinking and dye bleed are risks for wool, silk and viscose, which is exactly why we do not clean those and will tell you so.
