Family rug cleaning in Tea Tree Gully

Tea Tree Gully sits where the north-eastern suburbs run up against the hills face. The old village along North East Road, with its heritage hotel and museum, dates to the 1850s, but most of the suburb was built in the 1970s through the 1990s on blocks that slope towards Anstey Hill Recreation Park. The houses are large brick homes, often split-level to deal with the fall of the land, with mature gum trees, retaining walls and long driveways. Established families, retirees and a newer wave of buyers after the bush outlook live here.

Slate was the floor of choice when much of Tea Tree Gully was built, and a lot of homes still have it in the entry, kitchen and family room, with carpet in the lounge and bedrooms and timber or hybrid boards where owners have renovated. Rugs sit on the slate to take the cold out of it in winter: a large machine-made rug in the family room, a runner in the entry, and a rug in the lower-level rumpus where the kids and the dog spend their time. Wool rugs bought decades ago we refer to a specialist; the synthetic and cotton ones, which are most of them, we clean in place.

Hills-face winters are the issue here. The lower level of a split-level home on a sloping block sits closer to the damp ground, and a rug on slate or a rumpus floor can hold moisture for months, growing mildew along its underside and giving off a musty smell that is hard to trace. Dogs walked through Anstey Hill bring back mud, grass seeds and gum leaf litter, and the entry runner takes it all. Wood heaters leave fine ash on the rug in front of the hearth, and summer brings dust and the smell of a dog that has rolled in dry grass.

In a Tea Tree Gully home we lift the rug and look at the underside first, because mildew is common enough here that we would rather see it than guess. A rug with mould or mildew on the backing gets our mould and mildew treatment at +$40, then a full hot water extraction and a thorough dry. Mud, ash and leaf matter come out in the standard clean. We keep moisture low on slate so nothing pools in the grout. Rugs dry in two to four hours, longer in a cold rumpus in winter, so we book those in the morning. A 2 × 3 m rug is $139.

Tea Tree Gully questions

Asked in Tea Tree Gully

The rumpus room downstairs smells musty but I cannot see anything on the rug. What is going on?

It is usually the underside. Moisture from the slab or slate collects between the floor and the rug backing, and mildew grows where you cannot see it. We lift the rug, check it, treat it if needed and dry it completely. If the floor itself is damp we will tell you.

Our dog comes back from Anstey Hill covered in mud every winter. Is a rug worth having at the entry?

A synthetic runner at the entry is worth having precisely because it takes the mud so the carpet does not. Clean it once or twice a year, more if the dog is enthusiastic; it is a quick job on the driveway, and mud comes out of polypropylene far more easily than out of carpet.

Services & guides

How it works

Our 5-step in-home rug clean

  1. 1

    Check the rug

We read the label or test the fibre, check the backing, the stains and the smell, and tell you honestly what will lift — and whether it is a rug we should be cleaning at all.

  2. 2

    Dry vacuum both sides

Grit sits at the base of the pile and grinds the fibres every time you walk on it. A slow vacuum, both sides, gets it out before anything gets wet.

  3. 3

    Pre-treat

A pre-spray for the traffic lanes, enzyme for pet urine and organic stains, targeted treatment for wine, coffee and ink.

  4. 4

    Hot water extraction

Heated solution in, dirt and water straight back out in the same pass. Low moisture, so the floor underneath stays dry.

  5. 5

    Groom & dry

Optional sanitiser or Scotchgard, then we groom the pile so it dries evenly. Most rugs are dry in 2–4 hours.

Questions

Straight answers

How much does rug cleaning cost in Adelaide?

We price by the size of the rug. A runner or small rug up to 2 m² is $69, a medium rug (2–4 m²) $99, a large 2 × 3 m lounge rug $139, an extra large rug (6.5–9 m²) $179 and an oversized 3 × 4 m rug $219. Pet urine treatment, heavy stains, Scotchgard and sanitising are optional add-ons from $20–$40, all on our price table. The minimum booking is $89, every rug after the first in the same visit is 10% off, and the price is confirmed before we start.

Do you clean rugs in my home or take them away?

In your home. We bring a hot water extraction machine to you and clean the rug where it lies, or on a tiled floor, verandah or driveway if you prefer. There is no pick-up, no wash plant and no week without your rug — it is back in use the same day.

What kinds of rugs do you clean?

Synthetic rugs (polypropylene, polyester, nylon, acrylic), machine-made wool-look rugs, cotton flatweaves, shag and high-pile synthetic rugs, kids’ rugs, hallway runners, outdoor rugs and rubber-backed mats. We do not clean wool, hand-knotted Persian or Oriental, silk, viscose, jute, sisal, sheepskin or cowhide rugs — those need a specialist rug laundry, and we will tell you so rather than risk your rug.

How long does a rug take to dry?

Most synthetic rugs are dry to the touch in 2–4 hours, thick shag and cotton closer to 4–6. We extract as much water as the machine will pull, groom the pile, and tell you how to speed it up — lift one edge onto a chair for airflow underneath, a fan across the surface, and no furniture back on it until it is fully dry. Book a morning slot and you are walking on it that evening.
