Rug Mould & Mildew Removal Adelaide

Adelaide winters are damp enough and hills houses cold enough that a rug on a slab, under a pot plant or next to a leaking window can grow mildew before anyone notices. The smell is sour, the spots are grey or black, and the pile goes stiff. Surface mildew on a synthetic rug is usually recoverable. We treat it, extract it, dry it properly — and tell you straight when a rug has gone too far.

How rugs get mouldy in Adelaide

What the treatment involves

We start by lifting the rug and checking the back and the floor underneath, because that is where the moisture is. Surface mildew gets a dry HEPA vacuum of both sides to remove spores before anything gets wet, an antimicrobial pre-treatment with proper dwell time, then hot water extraction of the whole rug with a sanitising rinse. The critical part is drying: we extract as much water as the machine will pull, groom the pile, and get the rug up off the floor with airflow underneath. A mouldy rug that is cleaned and then put back on a damp slab will be mouldy again by spring, so we also tell you what to do about the floor. The treatment is +$40 per rug on top of the size price.

When a rug can’t be saved

If mould has grown through the backing — the back is black or green over a wide area, the rug is stiff and brittle, or it has been wet for weeks — cleaning will improve the look but the smell and the spores come back. We do not sell you that clean. Natural-fibre rugs (jute, sisal, wool) that have gone mouldy are almost always past saving and are not rugs we clean anyway. For a synthetic rug with a few patches of surface mildew and a damp smell, the odds are good, and we will give you our honest read when we see it.

Keeping it from coming back

Get the rug off the slab in winter, or put a breathable rug pad under it. Move pot plants onto saucers and off the rug. Run the heater or a dehumidifier in rooms that stay cold, and open the house up on dry sunny days. If a rug gets soaked, get it up, outside and dry within a day — that one habit prevents nearly all of the mould we see.

Common questions

Mould & mildew removal — questions

Can a mouldy rug be cleaned?

A synthetic rug with surface mildew, yes — we vacuum the spores out, treat with an antimicrobial, extract and dry it properly. A rug with mould through the backing, or a natural-fibre rug, usually cannot be saved and we will tell you rather than charge you.

Is it safe to keep a rug that smelled mouldy after cleaning?

If the smell is gone once the rug is fully dry, yes. If a musty smell returns within a couple of weeks, moisture is still getting in — usually from the floor underneath — and the rug needs to be lifted onto a pad or moved, not re-cleaned.

How much does rug mould removal cost in Adelaide?

The size price plus $40. A 2 × 3 m rug with mould and mildew treatment is $179. Minimum booking $89. If we look at the rug and judge it past saving, there is nothing to pay.
