Local service
Glenelg is where the tram ends and the beach begins. Moseley Square and Jetty Road carry the crowds in summer, the Holdfast Shores apartments line the marina behind the Patawalonga, and a block or two back the streets settle into 1920s bungalows, 1960s flats and townhouses on subdivided blocks. Owner-occupiers, long-term renters, retirees and a steady churn of short-stay guests live within a few streets of each other, and the one thing all those homes share is a rug full of beach.
In the apartments the floors are tiles or engineered boards, and a single large synthetic rug anchors the living area with a bath mat or two in the wet areas. The bungalows run to polished boards with a runner down the hall, a rug in each bedroom and a big one under the lounge suite. Holiday lets and Airbnbs around Jetty Road are furnished for turnover: hard-wearing polypropylene rugs, an indoor-outdoor rug on the balcony, and a doormat that gets replaced more than cleaned. We clean all of those where they lie; wool, hand-knotted and jute pieces we pass on, and say so up front.
Sand is the Glenelg problem. It comes home in towels, thongs and dog paws, falls to the base of the pile, and acts like fine sandpaper every time someone walks across it, so the fibres go dull and flat long before the rug is actually dirty. Salt air leaves rugs faintly tacky on still nights, and that holds grime. Short-stay rugs get sunscreen, fish and chips from the foreshore, red wine and the occasional sick child in one weekend, with a changeover deadline the next morning. In the older flats and bungalows it is more often years of foot traffic and a dog that has made the lounge rug its bed.
Before any water goes near the rug we vacuum it hard from both sides, because extraction alone will not shift sand that has settled at the base of the pile. Then it is a hot water extraction pass with low-residue, child- and pet-safe products, rinsed back out so nothing sticky is left behind to grab the next lot of sand. For holiday lets we can add sanitise and deodorise at +$30 so the rug smells of nothing at all when the next guests arrive. Most rugs are dry in 2–4 hours, quicker with the balcony door open and a sea breeze through, and we work 7 days so a changeover day is not a problem.

Glenelg questions
Yes. We work 7 days, 7am–7pm, so a checkout-to-check-in window is workable. Send the rug sizes when you book and you will have the full price before we arrive. Synthetic and indoor-outdoor rugs are usually dry within a couple of hours with the balcony door open, and we leave the rug flat and ready for the beds to be made.
Almost certainly. A household vacuum pulls sand from the top of the pile but not from the base, where most of it sits. We vacuum both sides on a hard surface first, then the extraction pass flushes the rest out with the water. Rugs usually feel noticeably softer underfoot afterwards. If the pile has worn flat from years of sand we will tell you before you commit.
How it works
We read the label or test the fibre, check the backing, the stains and the smell, and tell you honestly what will lift — and whether it is a rug we should be cleaning at all.
Grit sits at the base of the pile and grinds the fibres every time you walk on it. A slow vacuum, both sides, gets it out before anything gets wet.
A pre-spray for the traffic lanes, enzyme for pet urine and organic stains, targeted treatment for wine, coffee and ink.
Heated solution in, dirt and water straight back out in the same pass. Low moisture, so the floor underneath stays dry.
Optional sanitiser or Scotchgard, then we groom the pile so it dries evenly. Most rugs are dry in 2–4 hours.
Questions
We price by the size of the rug. A runner or small rug up to 2 m² is $69, a medium rug (2–4 m²) $99, a large 2 × 3 m lounge rug $139, an extra large rug (6.5–9 m²) $179 and an oversized 3 × 4 m rug $219. Pet urine treatment, heavy stains, Scotchgard and sanitising are optional add-ons from $20–$40, all on our price table. The minimum booking is $89, every rug after the first in the same visit is 10% off, and the price is confirmed before we start.
In your home. We bring a hot water extraction machine to you and clean the rug where it lies, or on a tiled floor, verandah or driveway if you prefer. There is no pick-up, no wash plant and no week without your rug — it is back in use the same day.
Synthetic rugs (polypropylene, polyester, nylon, acrylic), machine-made wool-look rugs, cotton flatweaves, shag and high-pile synthetic rugs, kids’ rugs, hallway runners, outdoor rugs and rubber-backed mats. We do not clean wool, hand-knotted Persian or Oriental, silk, viscose, jute, sisal, sheepskin or cowhide rugs — those need a specialist rug laundry, and we will tell you so rather than risk your rug.
Most synthetic rugs are dry to the touch in 2–4 hours, thick shag and cotton closer to 4–6. We extract as much water as the machine will pull, groom the pile, and tell you how to speed it up — lift one edge onto a chair for airflow underneath, a fan across the surface, and no furniture back on it until it is fully dry. Book a morning slot and you are walking on it that evening.
