Guide · Updated October 2026
Rugs are the dirtiest textile in most homes and the least often cleaned. Here is a schedule that reflects how Adelaide households actually live, and the signs you have left it too long.
Grit, stains and pet smells — lifted out of the rug, not covered up.
The short answer
Vacuum a rug in a living area weekly (twice a week with pets or kids), flip and vacuum the back every few months, and have it professionally deep cleaned every 12–18 months — every 6–12 months for homes with dogs, cats, toddlers, asthma or allergies, and for entry and hallway runners. Clean sooner after any pet accident or a spill that did not blot out. Natural-fibre and wool rugs follow a different, gentler schedule with a specialist.
Vacuuming reaches the top of the pile. Oils from feet and paws, fine dust, skin flakes, food and whatever the dog walked in bind the dirt lower down, and only hot water extraction gets it out. For a synthetic or cotton rug in a normal living room, every 12–18 months keeps it looking and smelling new. Move to every 6–12 months if you have a dog or cat that lies on it, a toddler who eats on it, anyone with asthma or a dust allergy, or a rug at the front door or in a hallway. Short-stay and rental properties should be done between every long tenancy and at least yearly. A 2 × 3 m rug is $139 with us, cleaned in your home.
Wool and hand-knotted rugs want frequent gentle vacuuming without a beater bar and a specialist wash every two to four years, not an annual steam clean. Jute, sisal and seagrass should never be wet-cleaned; vacuum, shake and spot-blot only. Viscose and silk should go to a specialist for anything beyond a careful vacuum. If you are not sure what your rug is, our guide on telling what a rug is made of takes a minute and saves a ruined rug.

Common questions
Every 6–12 months, and straight away after any urine accident. Dogs bring in grit and oil and leave dander and body oils where they lie, which is also where the smell comes from. Vacuum twice a week in between.
A synthetic rug, not really — hot water extraction with controlled moisture does not wear it. Wool and natural fibres can be over-washed and felt or weaken, which is why they are on a two-to-four-year cycle with a specialist instead.
If you like it and it is only dirty, yes — $69–$139 against $150–$400 to replace, with the bonus of not throwing a rug in landfill. If the backing is cracking or the pile is bald in the traffic lane, replace it.
