Why Does My Rug Smell After Cleaning?

You cleaned the rug and now it smells worse — musty, sour, like a wet dog, or the old urine smell is back. It is common, it has a short list of causes, and most of them are fixable.

Grit, stains and pet smells — lifted out of the rug, not covered up.

The short answer

A rug that smells after cleaning was usually left too wet (musty or sour smell from bacteria and mildew in the backing), had pet urine that water reactivated rather than removed (ammonia smell returning), is wool or a wool blend that smells like wet dog until fully dry, or has detergent residue left in the pile. Fix it by getting the rug fully dry — up off the floor, with airflow — within 24 hours; if the smell survives complete drying, it needs an enzyme treatment or a proper extraction re-clean.

The five usual causes

Fix it at home

Get the rug up and dry today. Hang it over a clothesline, a railing or two chairs, both sides exposed, with a fan running or a breeze through the room; outside in the shade on a dry day is ideal. Check the floor underneath and dry or clean that too. Once bone dry, vacuum both sides thoroughly. If the smell was musty and is now gone, you are done — it was moisture. If it is faintly chemical, a light misting of water and bicarb on the pile, left to dry and vacuumed, lifts some residue. If it is urine, no amount of drying fixes it; it needs enzyme.

When it needs a professional

Three signs: the smell survives complete drying, the back of the rug has stiff or discoloured patches, or you can see grey or black speckling in the pile. The first two point to urine or residue deep in the backing, which needs enzyme treatment with dwell time and hot water extraction powerful enough to flush both sides. The third is mould, which needs an antimicrobial treatment and, frankly, a judgement about whether the rug is worth saving. A good cleaner will tell you that before charging you.

Preventing it next time

Drying is everything. Whoever cleans the rug, it should be dry to the touch within about four hours and dry through within a day. Lift one edge onto a chair so air gets under it, run a fan, keep furniture off it, and do not put it back on a cold slab or tiles until it is completely dry. If you use a hire machine, do twice as many dry passes as wet ones and use half the solution the label suggests. And treat pet urine with enzyme before any wet clean, never after.

Common questions

People also ask

Why does my rug smell like wet dog after cleaning?

Either it is wool or a wool blend, which smells of lanolin while damp and stops once fully dry, or an actual dog has been on it and the water has lifted body oils and dander to the surface. Dry it fully off the floor; if the smell stays, it needs a proper extraction clean.

How do I get a musty smell out of a rug?

Dry it completely — off the floor, both sides, with airflow — then vacuum it. Musty means moisture. If the smell comes back or you see grey spotting, mildew has set in the backing and it needs an antimicrobial treatment and extraction.

Will the smell go away on its own?

Wet-wool and damp smells go once the rug is properly dry. Urine and mould do not — they get worse on warm, humid days. If a smell is still there a week after the rug is bone dry, it will not fade by itself.
