Rug cleaning in Stirling and the hills

Stirling is the heart of the Adelaide Hills villages, with Druid Avenue and Mount Barker Road lined by deciduous trees that turn in autumn and drop everything by June. The market fills the main street one Sunday a month, Mount Lofty sits above it, and the houses range from old stone homes and cottages in large gardens to 1970s brick and timber places tucked into the gullies. Winters are colder, wetter and foggier than anywhere on the plains, and that shapes how a rug lives here.

Stone homes here have boards or slate floors and a rug in every room for warmth: a large rug in front of the wood fire, runners along cold halls, cotton or synthetic rugs in bedrooms. Newer homes have carpet with a rug protecting the walkway, and a rumpus or lower level on a slab with a playroom rug. Back doors open onto gardens and have a rubber-backed mat for gumboots. Many households own at least one wool or hand-knotted piece, which we leave to specialist laundries, but the machine-made and synthetic rugs that do the daily work are what we clean.

Damp is the Stirling problem. A rug on a slab or on slate in a stone house traps moisture underneath all winter, and by spring there is mildew on the backing and a musty smell in the room. Wood-fire soot settles as a grey film across the lounge rug and smells of smoke. Leaf litter and mud come in constantly from the garden, so entry runners are brown by July. Dogs are wet from May to October. Anything spilled in a cold house dries slowly and sets, and rugs that are cleaned but not dried properly simply go musty again. Summer brings dust and bushfire-season grit instead.

We check the back of every rug before we start, because in Stirling that is where the trouble is, and tell you plainly what we find. Mould and mildew treatment at +$40 deals with the backing and the smell; soot comes out with the right pre-spray and thorough rinsing. Drying is the part we plan for: a morning booking, the fire or heater going, a fan, and the rug lifted onto a chair so air gets underneath. Allow the long end of 2–4 hours, and longer for thick rugs in winter. A medium 1.6 × 2.3 m rug is $99. On slate and old boards we keep moisture low and extract straight back out.

Stirling questions

Asked in Stirling

There is mould on the back of my rug. Can it be saved?

Often, if it is a synthetic or cotton rug and the mould is on the surface of the backing rather than through it. We clean both sides, apply the mould and mildew treatment, and dry it properly. If the backing has rotted or the smell is in the foam, we will tell you before you pay that it is not worth cleaning.

How do I stop the rug going musty again in winter?

Airflow underneath. Lift and air the rug on a dry day once a month, use a breathable underlay rather than a rubber one on slate or slab, and run a dehumidifier in the room you heat least. Cleaning removes the residue that feeds mildew, but a damp room will grow it again on anything.

Services & guides

How it works

Our 5-step in-home rug clean

  1. 1

    Check the rug

We read the label or test the fibre, check the backing, the stains and the smell, and tell you honestly what will lift — and whether it is a rug we should be cleaning at all.

  2. 2

    Dry vacuum both sides

Grit sits at the base of the pile and grinds the fibres every time you walk on it. A slow vacuum, both sides, gets it out before anything gets wet.

  3. 3

    Pre-treat

A pre-spray for the traffic lanes, enzyme for pet urine and organic stains, targeted treatment for wine, coffee and ink.

  4. 4

    Hot water extraction

Heated solution in, dirt and water straight back out in the same pass. Low moisture, so the floor underneath stays dry.

  5. 5

    Groom & dry

Optional sanitiser or Scotchgard, then we groom the pile so it dries evenly. Most rugs are dry in 2–4 hours.

Questions

Straight answers

How much does rug cleaning cost in Adelaide?

We price by the size of the rug. A runner or small rug up to 2 m² is $69, a medium rug (2–4 m²) $99, a large 2 × 3 m lounge rug $139, an extra large rug (6.5–9 m²) $179 and an oversized 3 × 4 m rug $219. Pet urine treatment, heavy stains, Scotchgard and sanitising are optional add-ons from $20–$40, all on our price table. The minimum booking is $89, every rug after the first in the same visit is 10% off, and the price is confirmed before we start.

Do you clean rugs in my home or take them away?

In your home. We bring a hot water extraction machine to you and clean the rug where it lies, or on a tiled floor, verandah or driveway if you prefer. There is no pick-up, no wash plant and no week without your rug — it is back in use the same day.

What kinds of rugs do you clean?

Synthetic rugs (polypropylene, polyester, nylon, acrylic), machine-made wool-look rugs, cotton flatweaves, shag and high-pile synthetic rugs, kids’ rugs, hallway runners, outdoor rugs and rubber-backed mats. We do not clean wool, hand-knotted Persian or Oriental, silk, viscose, jute, sisal, sheepskin or cowhide rugs — those need a specialist rug laundry, and we will tell you so rather than risk your rug.

How long does a rug take to dry?

Most synthetic rugs are dry to the touch in 2–4 hours, thick shag and cotton closer to 4–6. We extract as much water as the machine will pull, groom the pile, and tell you how to speed it up — lift one edge onto a chair for airflow underneath, a fan across the surface, and no furniture back on it until it is fully dry. Book a morning slot and you are walking on it that evening.
