Semaphore · SA 5019
Heritage cottages, the Esplanade and a jetty everyone walks to — rug cleaning in your Semaphore home, honest about stains before you pay a cent.
Grit, stains and pet smells — lifted out of the rug, not covered up.
Local service
Semaphore keeps its old seaside character better than most of the coast. Semaphore Road runs from the Esplanade and the jetty inland past pubs, op-shops and the Odeon, and the streets off it are full of stone and brick cottages, villas with iron lace, and the occasional 1960s block of flats. The Time Ball Tower and the Palais sit on the foreshore, dogs outnumber prams on the Esplanade, and the summer carnival brings the whole western suburbs to the lawns.
Cottages here have small rooms, high ceilings and original boards, so rugs are medium rather than huge: a 1.6 × 2.3 m rug in the front room, a runner in the narrow hall, cotton flatweaves in the bedrooms. The villas have formal front rooms where a big patterned rug sits under good furniture, and renovated kitchens at the back with an indoor-outdoor rug by the door to the yard. Flats near the beach are tiled with a single lounge rug. Owners here like character pieces, which sometimes means a wool or hand-knotted rug we cannot take on, and we say so rather than guess.
Salt air is constant in Semaphore, and it leaves rugs faintly damp on still mornings so they hold onto dust and dog hair. Beach sand arrives in bags, towels and paws and settles at the base of the pile where a vacuum cannot reach. Old cottages are draughty, so there is grit under doors and a dark strip along the hall runner. Dogs rule here, and most lounge rugs have a favourite corner that smells of wet dog by the end of winter. Fringed rugs pick up sand and go grey at the edges long before the middle looks dirty.
Every rug gets vacuumed on both sides before any water, which is where the Semaphore sand comes out. Then a hot water extraction pass with child- and pet-safe products, rinsed through so the pile is left clean rather than coated. Fringed and bound-edge rugs get the fringe and edge detail at +$20, which cleans and straightens the edges that go grey first. A medium rug is $99. On original boards we keep moisture low and check underneath; if you would rather, a cottage verandah or the back path works for drying in the sea breeze. Most rugs are dry in 2–4 hours.

Semaphore questions
It helps, as long as the rug dries properly afterwards. We extract most of the water as we go, then show you how to lift an edge for airflow. A rug that has had the salty, dusty residue rinsed out stops feeling tacky, because it is the residue that holds the damp. We time the visit for a dry, breezy day where we can.
Usually yes. The fringe and edge detail gives the tassels a separate clean, rinse and straighten, since they trap sand and grit before the rest of the rug does. If the fringe is on a hand-knotted wool rug we will tell you straight that it is one for a specialist laundry rather than us.
How it works
We read the label or test the fibre, check the backing, the stains and the smell, and tell you honestly what will lift — and whether it is a rug we should be cleaning at all.
Grit sits at the base of the pile and grinds the fibres every time you walk on it. A slow vacuum, both sides, gets it out before anything gets wet.
A pre-spray for the traffic lanes, enzyme for pet urine and organic stains, targeted treatment for wine, coffee and ink.
Heated solution in, dirt and water straight back out in the same pass. Low moisture, so the floor underneath stays dry.
Optional sanitiser or Scotchgard, then we groom the pile so it dries evenly. Most rugs are dry in 2–4 hours.
Questions
We price by the size of the rug. A runner or small rug up to 2 m² is $69, a medium rug (2–4 m²) $99, a large 2 × 3 m lounge rug $139, an extra large rug (6.5–9 m²) $179 and an oversized 3 × 4 m rug $219. Pet urine treatment, heavy stains, Scotchgard and sanitising are optional add-ons from $20–$40, all on our price table. The minimum booking is $89, every rug after the first in the same visit is 10% off, and the price is confirmed before we start.
In your home. We bring a hot water extraction machine to you and clean the rug where it lies, or on a tiled floor, verandah or driveway if you prefer. There is no pick-up, no wash plant and no week without your rug — it is back in use the same day.
Synthetic rugs (polypropylene, polyester, nylon, acrylic), machine-made wool-look rugs, cotton flatweaves, shag and high-pile synthetic rugs, kids’ rugs, hallway runners, outdoor rugs and rubber-backed mats. We do not clean wool, hand-knotted Persian or Oriental, silk, viscose, jute, sisal, sheepskin or cowhide rugs — those need a specialist rug laundry, and we will tell you so rather than risk your rug.
Most synthetic rugs are dry to the touch in 2–4 hours, thick shag and cotton closer to 4–6. We extract as much water as the machine will pull, groom the pile, and tell you how to speed it up — lift one edge onto a chair for airflow underneath, a fan across the surface, and no furniture back on it until it is fully dry. Book a morning slot and you are walking on it that evening.
A 2 × 3 m rug is $139 in Adelaide, cleaned in your home. 7 days a week.
