Colonel Light Gardens · SA 5041
A whole suburb on the State Heritage Register, 1920s bungalows with polished boards and picture rails — in-home rug cleaning in Colonel Light Gardens for the rugs that make those rooms work.
Grit, stains and pet smells — lifted out of the rug, not covered up.
Local service
Colonel Light Gardens is Adelaide’s garden suburb, laid out in 1917 on Charles Reade’s plan and now protected as a State Heritage Area in its entirety. The curving streets, the small reserves tucked between them and Mortlock Park give it a feel nothing else in the city has, and the housing is overwhelmingly original: 1920s Californian and Tudor bungalows in red brick and render, with Goodwood Road and Springbank Road at the edges. Residents tend to be here for the long haul, and the homes are kept with care.
Polished Baltic pine and jarrah boards are standard, often original, and with heritage rules limiting what can change outside, owners spend on the inside. Rugs here are chosen rather than bought in a hurry: a large patterned machine-made rug in the lounge in front of the fireplace, a long runner down the central hall, a flatweave in the sunroom at the back, and cotton or synthetic rugs in the kids’ rooms. A number of homes have hand-knotted wool or Persian pieces, and those we do not clean; we will say so on arrival and point you to a specialist laundry. Everything synthetic or cotton we clean on the boards where it lies.
A central hallway in a Colonel Light Gardens bungalow is long and takes every footstep, so the runner wears a dark path from the front door to the kitchen. Old boards have gaps, and dust from under the house rises through them into the back of any rug that does not get lifted, leaving a grey shadow on the floor when it finally moves. Open fireplaces and wood heaters add soot and ash. The gardens that give the suburb its name bring in mulch, leaf litter and dog hair, and a cream rug in a front room with north light shows every mark and fades on one side.
Boards come first. We keep the moisture low, extract it straight back out and lift the rug afterwards to check the timber is dry, or carry it to the back verandah if you would prefer it not done inside at all. Both faces are dry vacuumed before any water touches the rug, so the under-house dust and ash come out rather than turning to mud. Dark hallway paths lift with a pre-spray and extra passes. Fringed rugs get the fringe and edge detail at +$20, hand-cleaned so the tassels come up white without fraying. An extra large rug, say 2.4 × 3.4 m for a big front room, is $179. Dry in 2–4 hours, cotton flatweaves a little longer.

Colonel Light Gardens questions
No, and we would rather tell you up front. Hand-knotted wool and Persian rugs need a specialist rug laundry with full immersion washing and controlled drying, not an in-home machine. We will confirm what you have when we arrive, clean your synthetic and cotton rugs, and leave the heirloom for the specialist.
Not with proper extraction. The water goes in and comes straight back out, and we lift the rug before leaving to confirm the boards beneath are dry. Many owners of heritage homes prefer we clean on the back verandah or the driveway anyway, which we are happy to do on a fine day.
How it works
We read the label or test the fibre, check the backing, the stains and the smell, and tell you honestly what will lift — and whether it is a rug we should be cleaning at all.
Grit sits at the base of the pile and grinds the fibres every time you walk on it. A slow vacuum, both sides, gets it out before anything gets wet.
A pre-spray for the traffic lanes, enzyme for pet urine and organic stains, targeted treatment for wine, coffee and ink.
Heated solution in, dirt and water straight back out in the same pass. Low moisture, so the floor underneath stays dry.
Optional sanitiser or Scotchgard, then we groom the pile so it dries evenly. Most rugs are dry in 2–4 hours.
Questions
We price by the size of the rug. A runner or small rug up to 2 m² is $69, a medium rug (2–4 m²) $99, a large 2 × 3 m lounge rug $139, an extra large rug (6.5–9 m²) $179 and an oversized 3 × 4 m rug $219. Pet urine treatment, heavy stains, Scotchgard and sanitising are optional add-ons from $20–$40, all on our price table. The minimum booking is $89, every rug after the first in the same visit is 10% off, and the price is confirmed before we start.
In your home. We bring a hot water extraction machine to you and clean the rug where it lies, or on a tiled floor, verandah or driveway if you prefer. There is no pick-up, no wash plant and no week without your rug — it is back in use the same day.
Synthetic rugs (polypropylene, polyester, nylon, acrylic), machine-made wool-look rugs, cotton flatweaves, shag and high-pile synthetic rugs, kids’ rugs, hallway runners, outdoor rugs and rubber-backed mats. We do not clean wool, hand-knotted Persian or Oriental, silk, viscose, jute, sisal, sheepskin or cowhide rugs — those need a specialist rug laundry, and we will tell you so rather than risk your rug.
Most synthetic rugs are dry to the touch in 2–4 hours, thick shag and cotton closer to 4–6. We extract as much water as the machine will pull, groom the pile, and tell you how to speed it up — lift one edge onto a chair for airflow underneath, a fan across the surface, and no furniture back on it until it is fully dry. Book a morning slot and you are walking on it that evening.
A 2 × 3 m rug is $139 in Adelaide, cleaned in your home. 7 days a week.
