Rug cleaning across Brighton

Jetty Road runs straight down from Brighton Road to the jetty, and the streets either side of it hold some of the well-kept character homes of the coast: 1920s bungalows with return verandahs, stone villas, a scatter of 1960s cream brick, and the double-storey rebuilds that replaced the shacks along the Esplanade. Brighton is a settled suburb with families who have been here a generation, retirees who walked the jetty this morning, and a few holiday lets near the beach. Nearly all of them have a rug on polished boards.

Baltic pine and jarrah boards run through the bungalows, and a rug on them is as much about stopping the draught as about looks: a large lounge rug in the front room, a runner down the hall, a cotton flatweave or synthetic in the back bedrooms. The newer Esplanade builds swap boards for tiles or engineered oak and go bigger, with an oversized rug anchoring an open living area that faces the water. Outdoor and indoor-outdoor rugs are everywhere on Brighton decks and balconies. We clean the synthetic, cotton, machine-made and outdoor pieces where they lie; if the rug in your front room is a wool Persian that came with the house, we will say so rather than risk it.

Sand is the story here. It comes home from the beach in towels, thongs and dog paws, falls to the base of the pile and acts like sandpaper every time someone walks across, so the runner from the front door wears out from the bottom up. Salt air leaves everything a little damp in winter, and a rug that never gets lifted off the boards can start to smell musty by August. Outdoor rugs on seaward balconies take salt spray and seagull mess. Add a dog that swims most mornings and then lies on the lounge rug, and you have a wet-dog smell the open windows cannot shift.

We vacuum both faces of the rug before anything gets wet, because sand has to come out dry or it turns to grit paste. Then a hot water extraction pass cleans the pile and pulls the moisture straight back out, so the boards beneath stay dry; on a fine day many Brighton customers have us do it on the back patio instead. The wet-dog smell gets a deodorising rinse, and if the dog has also had an accident we will show you where before suggesting the urine treatment. Scotchgard at +$30 on a runner to large rug is worth it near the beach, as it makes the next lot of sand vacuum out instead of binding in. Dry in 2–4 hours with the sea breeze through the house.

Brighton questions

Asked in Brighton

How do you get beach sand out of a rug without wrecking it?

Dry first, always. We vacuum the back of the rug so the sand drops out of the base of the pile, flip it, vacuum the face, and only then start the hot water extraction. Wetting a sandy rug first just grinds the sand deeper. For a shag rug we tap and vacuum several times before the wet pass.

Can you clean the outdoor rug on our Esplanade balcony?

Yes, indoor-outdoor polypropylene rugs clean up well. We can do it on the balcony itself or lay it on the driveway, rinse out salt and bird mess, and extract the water out. Because they are usually flatweave they dry fast, often within a couple of hours in the sea breeze.

Services & guides

How it works

Our 5-step in-home rug clean

  1. 1

    Check the rug

We read the label or test the fibre, check the backing, the stains and the smell, and tell you honestly what will lift — and whether it is a rug we should be cleaning at all.

  2. 2

    Dry vacuum both sides

Grit sits at the base of the pile and grinds the fibres every time you walk on it. A slow vacuum, both sides, gets it out before anything gets wet.

  3. 3

    Pre-treat

A pre-spray for the traffic lanes, enzyme for pet urine and organic stains, targeted treatment for wine, coffee and ink.

  4. 4

    Hot water extraction

Heated solution in, dirt and water straight back out in the same pass. Low moisture, so the floor underneath stays dry.

  5. 5

    Groom & dry

Optional sanitiser or Scotchgard, then we groom the pile so it dries evenly. Most rugs are dry in 2–4 hours.

Questions

Straight answers

How much does rug cleaning cost in Adelaide?

We price by the size of the rug. A runner or small rug up to 2 m² is $69, a medium rug (2–4 m²) $99, a large 2 × 3 m lounge rug $139, an extra large rug (6.5–9 m²) $179 and an oversized 3 × 4 m rug $219. Pet urine treatment, heavy stains, Scotchgard and sanitising are optional add-ons from $20–$40, all on our price table. The minimum booking is $89, every rug after the first in the same visit is 10% off, and the price is confirmed before we start.

Do you clean rugs in my home or take them away?

In your home. We bring a hot water extraction machine to you and clean the rug where it lies, or on a tiled floor, verandah or driveway if you prefer. There is no pick-up, no wash plant and no week without your rug — it is back in use the same day.

What kinds of rugs do you clean?

Synthetic rugs (polypropylene, polyester, nylon, acrylic), machine-made wool-look rugs, cotton flatweaves, shag and high-pile synthetic rugs, kids’ rugs, hallway runners, outdoor rugs and rubber-backed mats. We do not clean wool, hand-knotted Persian or Oriental, silk, viscose, jute, sisal, sheepskin or cowhide rugs — those need a specialist rug laundry, and we will tell you so rather than risk your rug.

How long does a rug take to dry?

Most synthetic rugs are dry to the touch in 2–4 hours, thick shag and cotton closer to 4–6. We extract as much water as the machine will pull, groom the pile, and tell you how to speed it up — lift one edge onto a chair for airflow underneath, a fan across the surface, and no furniture back on it until it is fully dry. Book a morning slot and you are walking on it that evening.
